News update courtesy of John Parker | Toronto City Councillor | Ward 26

October 13th, 2011 - As part of the City’s efforts to limit basement flooding and protect our waterways from pollution, City Council has voted to make it mandatory for property owners to disconnect their downspouts from the sewer system. The majority of Ward 26 falls under Phase 1 of this program. Residences east of the Don River West Branch and south of Kilgour Rd must disconnect their downspouts by 20 November 2011.

September Rounds Out a Strong Third Quarter

TORONTO, October 5, 2011 – Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 7,658 transactions through the TorontoMLS® system in September – a 25 per cent increase over September 2010. Sales during the first three quarters of 2011 amounted to 70,588, representing a 2.6 per cent increase compared to the first nine months of 2010.

“We have experienced strong growth in sales so far this year, with a much more active summer compared to 2010. However, while sales have been strong, we have continued to experience a shortage of listings, resulting in more competition between home buyers,” said Toronto Real Estate Board President Richard Silver. “Over the past few months, the listing situation has started to improve, so we expect home buyers will have more homes to choose from in the months ahead.”

URGENT: Tuesday October 11, 2011 - Northlea Blood Donor Clinic

Message from the Northlea Community Blood Donor Clinic Committee

Be part of Northlea Community's 18th Blood Donor Clinic

A Leaside mother, neighbour and friend is fighting cancer.

A note from her husband - "Cathy is a 44 year old Leaside resident and mother of three children, who was suddenly diagnosed with a life threatening leukemia in February 2011. Her only chance at a cure was intensive chemotherapy followed by a Stem Cell Transplant. Cathy did find a donor match through Onematch in July, after numerous stem cell swabbing events held in her honour, one held here at Northlea. At present, we do not know from where, but are very grateful to that generous anonymous person out there. Cathy is scheduled for transplant this October. During this procedure Cathy will again require constant transfusions of blood products as she did during her previous three rounds of chemotherapy in order to survive. To date Cathy has received well over 30 units of blood and 25 units of platelets. Without these generous donations, people like Cathy would have no chance at survival."

In November of 2002, two Leaside area students were diagnosed with leukemia in the same week. They required blood transfusions to save their lives and help them fight the disease. The Leaside community began running blood donor clinics twice a year to support them in their battle.

Cathy and her her family need our support and encouragement. Your presence and donation at the clinic will give her that, and save lives at the same time.

Where? Northlea School (North Gym) 305 Rumsey Road

When? Tuesday, October 11, 2011 from 2:00-8:00 p.m.

R.S.V.P. by calling the Canadian Blood Services appointment number at 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) NOW! The criteria for donating can be found at http://www.bloodservices.ca/. Refreshments are available.
